High School Reunion
Sunday, September 23rd, 2007Wow…what a crazy couple of days!
Last night I had a High School Reunion at the Hyatt in Dearborn, MI. It was a nice hotel but I have a feeling the hotel security didn’t enjoy the reunion as much as the rest of us did. They ended up kicking people out of room parties most of the night.
I checked in to the hotel around 3pm and met up with some friends who started to trickle in around 5pm. The dinner started at 6-ish but everyone was so caught up saying “hello’s” and taking pictures in the hotel lobby…Didn’t end up getting into the banquet hall until after 6:30pm. [Maybe I’ll post some photos when I get back to CA later this week]
It was really nice to see the people who made it. It was a nice turnout but I expected more since it was a joint-reunion of 10 years of folks who went to my school. Even still…there were probably about 500 or 600 people there…maybe more.
It’s weird when you haven’t seen someone in such a long time…they look the same but not really. It’s as if, your brain fills in the morph from the missing years and once the name matches the face and image, it’s as if they haven’t changed at all. I’m pretty sure I look different than I did back then but people told me I still look the same ….(some damn good liars
*I sure hope I don’t look like how I did back then..I was a MESS
We all wore nametags but the printing was pretty small so I found myself squinting as I was walking around with my drink(s) trying to recognize people I knew. I loved giving the “sideways look”…you know, the one that dogs do when they’re asking for food? In human translation, it usually comes after you think you recognize someone but you’re not sure so you tilt your head sideways as if that’s going to help.
Everyone was pretty friendly… I wasn’t SUPER talkative in school but I pretty much knew who everyone was. I guess I was more of an observer back then. So yeah…I got to chat with people and see how life’s been to them the last years. Made me feel good and a little sad all at once…hard to explain.
What’s funny is… while walking around and listening to other people talk I could hear the exact same conversations going on. It was if there was a list that everyone had to check off and then move on to the next person.
- What are you doing these days?
- Are you married? Kids? [cue the baby pictures]
- Etc..
I found myself asking and being asked the same questions…it was expected and I didn’t mind in the least. Hell, any chance to get to do some shameful self-promotion and I’m happy as can be
Anyway…I could go on and on about this. It was a blast and I ‘m really glad I went to it. I’ll write more about that when I get my pictures downloaded…post a few and go into more details.
I’m getting sleepy now and a little tired to go too much into this… but tonight was also another reunion at a pool hall. It was friends who I’ve known since I was 5 years old who weren’t able to make the Hotel Reunion last night. It was just as fun though there were about 8 of us. More on this later.
Off to bed!
