RANTING!
WARNING: RANT about to happen in 5….4…3…2..1…..0
I’ll try to just stick with the facts here and make them easy to follow.
- My Bank is Wells Fargo.
- Over the last year or so, I built up 10,000 credit card points.
- I called a few days ago to redeem these points [which only translated into a measly $100.00, but hey...it's 100 bucks]
- Today I look at my online banking and I see a charge that says "REWARD ANNUAL PROGRAM FEE $80.00"
- I call the bank to say how this makes NO SENSE and to cancel my REWARD PROGRAM.
- They tell me it’s going to cost me $80.00 to cancel.
- So basically…my 10,000 points translated to $20.00.
This is FUCKED! I’m lucky to earn 10,000 points in a year and I would be charged $80.00 a year so I might end up OWING THEM money next year[as if they don't make enough money off me already]. I cut my losses and paid $80 to cancel and made a whopping $20.00 off this wonderful REWARD PROGRAM.
I’ll be banking somewhere else in the future because of this utterly idiotic event. Be warned for anyone who banks with Wells Fargo and who thinks they’re getting some great deal on Rewards and Points. I’m pissed!
UPDATE ON THIS:
I went into the bank yesterday to try to sort this out (with a person face to face) and get my $80 back…The lady there was very helpful. What happened was…whoever signed me up for this reward program…well they signed me up for the Super Program(so if i spent tons of money spending 80 a year would be a good thing) …the other deal they had was $29 a year…none sounded good to me…so i opted out of ALL REWARDS and will be changing banks when i get back from my trip in a few weeks. I STILL only earned $20 for 10,000 points…nice rewards.
Basically…it’s all my fault for not reading the fine print.
For anyone who signs up on their reward program..just be sure you get the right one.

Ugh…. banks and insurance companies make me pull my hair out. Why I still have a full head of hair is beyond me… Sorry about that, Bob… Your rant is fully justified. Someday I’ll write the story of how I have been fighting with Anthem/Wellpoint BC-BS since January about Medicare Part D for my mom, and how I finally had to get an attorney to write a letter to the company and the state insurance regulators to finally “win” the case. But the agony and hours I spent on the phone are lost forever. Someday I’ll write that rant…someday. But not today or else my blood pressure will go through the roof and my fist is likely to go through a wall. LOL
Hang in there..
yeah…what got me was when i had the bank reps on the phone…i asked them “does this really makes sense?”
They even agreed with me but they said there was nothing they could do about it.
I called twice and talked to two different people…i know it’s their jobs and not their fault but whoever makes these rules are idiots.
I agree with Val… I’ve heard a lot of people have bad experiences with Wells Fargo.
My mom’s bank account is so old, her account # only has 4 digits. When I go to do her banking the tellers have to go look it up because they think I’m not giving them correct number. Heh. It’s probably the one bank that’s always been there and never had a bad experience. It’s probably why mom and dad have had their accounts there for 60 years.
But yeah, overall banks suck it.
…well..i need ot find a bank that doesn’t suck
Wells Fargo sucks BIG TIME! All banks SUCK! I have the same reward program with Citibank and they do not charge an annual fee but I still hate them just on principal. My bank (who shall remain nameless) one lost a check I deposited. They took no responsibility for losing it and I had to go back to the issuer and have them put a stop on it and have them issue me another check. All banks claim that they are not responsible for checks until they have cleared even if they lose it while in their possession. If I hadn’t been with them for 35 years I would have transferred over to another bank. Fuckers.
I did get even though - big time - but can’t say how I did it.
i’ll check out Citibank…
it just sucks to change banks after being with one for so long… a pain
Another Wells Fargone customer here… I had a savings account that I used to keep money in, just to earn a little interest. I had no idea HOW LITTLE until I bumped into the number on-line. It’s not like they BRAG about it or anything… how could they? It’s only two-tenths of 1% ANNUALLY!!! If they take money out of my savings account to cover an overdraft in checking (yes, that sometimes happens, even to ME), they charge me $20 for the service. So I make 30 cents in interest and pay $20 for one lousy transfer from savings to checking… Inflation eats up anything I make in interest on my money, so it’s actually better to SPEND it all instead of saving it. Some incentive to ’save’… sometimes I think it might be better to keep my money in a coffee can in the backyard.
leave me a map of where to dig for that can ok
heheh
yeah…I’m just annoyed that i had to pay $80 to get out of this REWARD PROGRAM…what sort of reward is this?
Just surfed in via B.E. Sounds like a scam! Thanks for an interesting blog!
Hi Sue and welcome
yeah…this is a scam…perhaps if had more funds going in and out of the account paying $80 a year might be wroth it..but when they have free Reward Services out there….paying 80 to make 20 really does seem like a scam….
and by the way…they STILL have yet to credit me the original $100—it hasn’t shown up on the account. GRRR
I checked out Wells Fargo for a business account and they wanted to charge me $.35 per transaction… Totally Unaccaptable! I do almost all of my banking with my American Express account now.
Amex is good no?
I had WF for our Home Equity Line of Credit. HAD being the operative word. Run away — fast as you can.
For personal banking I’ve had American Express Bank (formerly Amex Membershp B@nking if this is he same one K is talkin bout) since about 99 or 2000. I dumped Chase because like most big banks, the fees or minimum balances are ridiculous. Amex Bank is totally on line so yea I have to mail in paper check to deposit (however I opened a local Commerce Bank account for that to avoid that wait) but otherwise Amex Bank rocks. You can use any ATM and they reimburse you the fee up to 1.50 per 4 times a month. I’ve never looked back.
I’ll checkout American Express …i’m going on a trip and will wait till i get back to mess with my banking any more than i have
but you can bet i won’t be staying with WF after this
Banks are not designed to help the ‘little people’ save or make money. In the long run it costs US to use THEIR services. It’s part of a grand design (I often think) but I cannot go into it here or I could just get arrested lol
BTW saw the first Rock Star, well actually the last two and the recap. Yup, just couldn’t see you up there with those guys, not your style….plus I’m pretty sure you don’t shop at Hot Topic!
yeah, i watched it last night too…
they didn’t have ANYONE from CA on the show so i don’t feel so bad
ah well…i’ll try next season and maybe stand a shot if it’s a different band
I don’t get it. I was gonna sign up for that same program and there is only a twelve dollar fee. How come it is more for you? Even with a business account it isn’t that much.
I would call them and ask why it is so much, cuz it clearly states twelve bucks.
But, that said, I am not gonna sign up now.
i called TWICE cuz i wasin shock over it…they charge you 12 to be part of the progrma but the second to you call to REDEEM the points is when the other charge kicks in…be careful when you redeem and ask what that charge is.
I wish i were making this up
Another lousy experience with Wells Fartgo…I was once paid by check from a client who banked with Wells Fartgo. I took the check to Wells Fartgo to cash it and they wouldn’t cash their own check cause I didn’t have a bank account with them. So I had to go to my own bank and cash it. So, if I didn’t have a checking account I could have never cashed the check. Wells Fartgo wears Prada.
No wonder some people keep their money under mattresses.
The WF bank has been good so far to me..it’s just this one flub that has me irked…still time to look for a new place
wells-fargo bought my mortgage and they’ve been a pain in the ass several times. it’s the first time i’ve done business with them but I learned very quickly that I will never willingly do business with them. they always pay my taxes and homeowners insurance late. and when they screw up, they always charge me a fee to correct it. once i asked if they would sell my mortgage to someone else - and they asked for a $325 fee to do so but couldn’t guarantee that they would after i sent them the money.
I’ve been hearing some really bad stories about WF since posting this…EEEK!
I use WF for my personal banking and every time I would stop by to deposit checks they would ask me “Can I ask you why you aren’t taking advantage of our rewards program?” I would continuously say ‘No, thank you.’ One time I even think that I had asked to stop being asked. Went to the drive-thru there a couple of weekes a go and they asked me again. This time, I don’t know why, I asked more about the program. She mentioned iPods, Frequent Flyer miles, blah, blah, blah…. but then she mentioned cash back. At this point I am thinking, “Hmmm, I can gain a little interest on my money just by the basic spending that I do.” Unfortunatly after she somehow convinced me and I signed up for it and drove off… I read the fine print and found out that it had to spend 5000/year to even have it pay for itself. Called up the number on the back of my card a few weeks later and fortunately they cancelled the program and assured me that I would not be charged the fee. Hopefully I won’t see a random $80 missing from my account come the end of the year. I also recognize that this is a fairly old blog post. Maybe they started losing customers because of it and that is why they let me cancel so easily (compared to let’s say trying to cancel an AOL subscription). Thanks for the blog post.
yeah..an old entry but i get emails whenever anyone posts on any entry

hehe..yeah…getting rid of AOL is like getting rod of LICE LOL
that fine print will get a every time
coz you’re just sexy like that! how was michigan?!:?::!:
