A Mourning After
Ok, what’s the deal with all this DEATH? I mean I know it’s all part of "life" but it just seems like just recently handfuls of people are passing away.
Just after Christmas, my Cuz (another Bob Gentry) who lives up north lost his mother… a few days after I heard that, Shelly Winters died….and just today I heard that Wilson Pickett passed away.
I had the opportunity a little over a year ago to meet Shelly Winters…she actually called me a few times. How is it that Shelly Winters called me? Well, I had just finished performing on Sally Kirkland’s TV talk show and Sally and Shelly were very close[Shelly was like a surrogate mother to Sally]. Sally invited me to come visit Shelly but at the time I was juggling things that had me self-absorbed [I was in NY auditioning for the musical RENT at the time I think and getting ready for a show in Vegas at the Palms Hotel]. Before I knew it, I missed the opportunity… I regret it. There’s much more to the story but that’s the short version.

Wilson Pickett is someone I never had the chance to meet but I’ve always been a huge fan of his music and voice.
"Wilson Pickett, the soul pioneer best known for the fiery hits "Mustang Sally" and "In The Midnight Hour," died of a heart attack Thursday, according to his management company. He was 64"
64 seems MIGHTY young…specially the older I get, the younger it seems.
One of my favorite movies is The Commitments. A great story about an Irish Soul band and in the end they were all hoping Pickett would show up at one of their concerts to "jam"
What a great movie this is. If you’re a Pickett fan, check it out.
It just seems like in the last year, we’ve lost some good people…not that we don’t lose good people every year…perhaps it’s just that I’m noticing it much more lately. Okay…now everyone just stop with this dying stuff okay? Let me just say that I’m very sorry for everyone’s loss.
Off subject, I returned from Vegas last night about 2am. It was pretty cold there, but slot machines do give off a little heat. I didn’t gamble too much though. Mainly, I went to just get out of town for a day. I visited with my friend Ruchelle and looked at some real estate there. It’s really amazing what you can get for the money in Las Vegas compared to homes in Southern California.
Here, a 2 bedroom condo STARTS at around a half a million (and I’m not talking 90210 either)…and the cost of living is just crazy. For that, you can buy a huge house with LAND in Vegas.
I’m just toying with the idea of getting a place in LV right now but when I think about having lived in CA for about the last 8 years and basically throwing away about $1000.00 a month in rentals(for very small studio apts), I get a sick feeling in my stomach knowing that about 100K has been wasted and all I have to show for it is this lousy T-shirt.
Owning property has never been some huge dream of mine…it would just be nice is all. With all that being said…it still feels good to be back home

If you wanna pick up some property CHEAP, you could probably get a nice house in any hick town in any of the hick states for less than a cockroach-infested crackerbox in Hollywood. But the career possiblities for a musician there only extend to open-mic night at the truck stop bar and booze house. I think you made the right decision ‘way back when regarding the move to LA…

i’m starting to think LA’s not the best place to be for a musician either though.
Vegas does have other open doors other than the open-mic nights ya know
I’m not leaving LA any time soon…i’m just looking at my options.
The nice thing about Vegas is…rather than going on tour, the tour comes to you…only trouble with that is, it would seem you’re stuck doing cover songs.
who knows…
We still live in the boonies, BUT, the indians dropped one of their Casinos in our little logging town and it is like some alien city decending from space. But it is the perfect location, (between Washington and California) a very successful Casino too. Lots of celebs have played out here. Johnny Cash was one, young rockers and oldsters too. Very strange. Poperty is still relatively cheap here. The Casino is 5 miles from our home and we are still in the boonies. Not sure how long that will last, but we live on 8 acres with river frontage so for a while we are safe from the sprawl.
we have a few casinos here …but nothing like Vegas. I really love going there to get away. I’m not so sure about living there tho
So Mike would you care to define “hick town” and/or “hick state”?
“hick”… adj. provincial, unsophisticated… obviously applying to no one anywhere in the USA these days… maybe a hill village in Afganistan
I loved the music, and I loved the movie. It’s one of my fav’s.
yeah…i should go see if they have it on DVD..it’s been a while since i’ve seen it.
such great music in it for sure!
Thought about you when i saw the news about Shelley Winters … and i thought maybe you went to Vegas to either gamble your sorrow away or … spend all the coin she left to you.
Glad you’re back.
*spend all the coin she left to you*
HA! i’m open for ANYONE to leave me coin
i’m not too proud
my dad is one who needs to leave me coin to make up for years of mental abuse but i’m not going to hold my breath on that (the bastard)
Vegas has been having issues with tremendous foreclosures for a few years now. Everyone bought when rates were low and when the ARM jump kicks in, they can’t afford what they bought. Great for people buying up the foreclosures, great property for a lot less and it drives the prices in the area down, generally. But bad for everyone else.
I would go to Vegas more often if I had something there I could call my own. But I couldn’t live there. I would be poor(er).
I have mixed feelings about actually living there. I love to gamble and i’m not sure me living there is such a good combo
On the other hand, I’m just amazed at what your money can buy there… Truth be told, i’d really like to buy something here in LA but i don’t think i could even afford a shoe box and it’s so hard to justify spending 400k on a super small studio. (specially when you don’t have 400K)
for anyone not living in CA and curious about pricing here in CA…here’s a link to an MLS

just type in “Hollywood” and tab down to “Condo” and the cheapest one is 349k [and this is cheap]
KRAZY for just a single condo
The Commitments is an excellant movie. I have it in my DVD collection. Guess I’ll have to watch it again soon.
I love the version of the song “at the dark end of the street” from that movie.
That guy’s voice is amazing!
Not too many people know about that movie but it’s so great!
Shelly Winters died????? I didn’t know! Damn. And Wilson Pickett. *sigh*
yeah…both died.
[Listening to Wilson Pickett as I type this]
I have a friend that moved to Vegas from So Cal and he hates it. Email me and I’ll put you in touch with him if you want his first hand account of what to expect. I will say he is not in show business so that might make a difference.
*I have a friend that moved to Vegas from So Cal and he hates it*
yeah…i know it’s one of those places that isn’t for everyone… I’m not sure how much i’d like living there but i sure love to visit it
