Obligatory Gas Price Post

Gas Price Blues

A friend of mine just purchased this new car above. Pretty sleek looking huh? Though it’s only one horse-power, it still has quite a bit of pull.

I’m still drooling over motorcycles. Drool, is the keyword there. I really want one, but It might be a little tough driving to a hockey game carrying a 70 pound bag filled with smelly equipment, not to mention sticks [that would be tricky]. Of course, I could always just wear my hockey equipment and get on the bike-though shifting gears with skates on might be just as complicated.

I’ve been holding back on complaining about the sky high gas prices figuring that it’s not going to help bring the prices back down…but HOW CAN YOU NOT say something? I need 2 platinum Visa cards just to fill up my tank these days. [I'd settle for a hit single too emoticon ]

In California people with Hybrid vehicles and motorcycles are allowed to drive in the carpool lanes [the diamond lanes known in some states]. Also, motorcycles are allowed to drive in-between cars. It’s legal…so if you’re in dead-stop traffic,…on a cycle, you get to pass everyone while they sit there and give you dirty looks. emoticon

I guess I shouldn’t complain too much since I try to drive as little as possible…but it certainly isn’t much fun to shell out about $40 for a full tank.

Speaking of hockey equipment…my blade sharpener arrived in today’s mail. The thing look like this…..

Sweet-Stick…and I had no clue how it actually sharpens the skate. Luckily, I found an online video demonstration:

See in ACTION HOW IT WORKS

Now I just want to get on the ice and spray some ice emoticon

Maybe we should just ice all the roads and hand out Ice Skates to everyone to solve our gas price issues? It would probably be much cheaper.

Oh…thanks for all the nice comments and emails on yesterday’s blog. I hope it doesn’t seem like I’m some sort of ego-monster who is so full of himself that i just love posting as many photos that I can of myself. That’s NOT the case. If anything, It’s a little scary to post photos of yourself and allow people to comment…I’m not THAT full of myself.

Please know that by publishing self-photos, I’m not fishing for compliments(though, I’ll take what I can get)…but mostly, I use this blog for friends, family and myself to say "hey, here’s what’s going on in my life right now"…and yesterday, it was a photo-shoot. ;-) Funny that "showing the color of my boxers" (as Ralph put it) would cause a stir. Mainly, I was just showing the new hair [or lack of].

UPDATE: Some time ago I posted an entry about my friend Shelly, whose aunt was in need of heart transplant. Shelly emailed me the other day to let me know that her aunt DID GET a heart. Just thought i’d pass that info along.

The only problem I’ve had with the new car is when the horsepower backfires.

What great news from Shelly, I hope her aunt recovers quickly.

Gotta love when stuff arrives in the mail, and you have no idea what to do with it. That happened once with some caulking tools. When they showed up at the door they were just little squares of plastic, and no instructions.

Thank God for Google…

Not all hybrids are allowed in the diamond lanes. In California, just the Toyota Prius. There are new hybrid SUVs on the road and they are not allowed in the diamond lanes because they are still considered gas guzzlers. I traded in my Nissan Murano SUV that was getting about 13 MPG in the city for a Lexus RX400h hybrid that gets about 22 MPG city. That is still considered a guzzler even though it’s far better than my previous SUV. The Toyota Prius’ gets anywhere from 35 to 60 MPG city. I am disappointed in my Lexus SUV mileage. The window sticker says that I should get from 26 to 36 MPG city driving. I have yet to reach more than 22 in the city. I should have done more research on the Lexus before I bought it. There are a LOT of disgruntled Lexus owners who feel as though they’ve been lied to. I called Lexus and basically, they could care less. They’ve got my money. Why should they?

so you can’t drive that $60,000.00 car in the carpool alone??? Those BASTARDS! ;) Those cars should come with human-like robots that inflate so you can drive in the diamond lane :-D

like robot-air-bags

OK, I watched the video, but I couldn’t hear the magic words that make it work. Do you have to pay extra for those? I got doggie toenail clippers for my puppy in the mail today… they don’t even have printed directions much less a video… :-/

Don’t worry about posting pictures of yourself, with each new look or new adventure. I love it, and I do the same thing, just so my friends can see what I’m up to NOW… this time I’m growing hair on my face and head to fill in around my goatee… but it’s in that scraggly stage that I call “homeless wino”. I want all my friends (all 5 of them) to enjoy a laugh at my expense. It’s the least I can do… when I get really desperate for attention, I post pictures of myself in my kilt.

Yeah, I can SEE the ‘quick’ thru Clay’s nails… I know not to cut THAT deep. But I think he’s gonna throw a hissy fit if I even try to trim his nails… maybe I can just get him to run like the wind back and forth on the concrete patio… :-D

When I lived in Orlando, I used to see people who would get a mannequin, put their arm around it, and pretend(or maybe not pretend) to talk to it, just so they could drive in the diamond carpool lane.

yeah…i’ve heard of people doing that here too.
it’s a $500.00 fine (i think) if you get caught doing that here….it might have gone up. No carpools there or no need for it?

Huh $40 for filling the whole tank? That´s ridiculous! I´d trade without hesitating! How much is a gallon over there these days?

My Audi has a 63 litre tank which is ~1,3€/l to fill up. Do the math - 87€ for one filling. (A gallon is a little more than three litres if I recall correctly). Given the current exchange rate I end up somewhere around three times as much for a single filling. (But probably you have a smaller gas tank?)

I only use my car for going to work anymore.

yeah..i try to drive as little as I can…it’s not normally too bad. if it wasn’t hockey and having to cart around musical stuff, i’d just get rid of the truck and buy the bike.
say…do you guys have speed limits on your freeways?

Comment by Haddock

In certain signed sections near cities, autobahn junctions etc then the there is a speed limit, but inbetween you can tank along as fast as you want. Obviously it’s better to go with the flow of traffic unless you want to end up in a massive accident.

we have highway 15 (that’s from Los Angeles to Las Vegas) ..i like to call that the autobahn :)
but the speed limit is 70mph
everyone does at least 90 though :)

As Haddock said. However most of the times the Autobahn is fairly crowded so you can´t go that fast all the time. And there is a final speed limitation in the cars at 250 km/h (~155 mph).

You pay $120 to fill up your gas tank?? Gas here is about $3.50 U.S. for one gallon. It is still cheap compared to Europe which has always been expensive. I guess everyone there is just used to it. I don’t feel so bad now but my niece who just returned from a European vacation said the dollar there is very weak. Do they have hybrid vehicles there yet?

The car in the picture looks like a Trabi (the most popular car in the former East Germany before the wall came down).

Haddock that´s not entirely true :) The Trabi was not only the most popular car, it was the ONLY car.
