Lost

I’m a huge Alias fan…What I usually do is just wait for the season to come out on DVD and watch them all back to back. I think Alias is too good to have to wait a whole week to see what happens next…and so…renting the DVD, I get to be in control
So when I was told about the creator of Alias coming out with this new show “Lost” I figured I would just wait until it was released to DVD and see what all the fuss is about.
I think I expected too much from the show perhaps, but with all the hand-held camera work it leaves me with wanting to puke after each show. It’s as if the camera man is intentionally trying to make the viewing audience sick. I don’t mind a little bit of hand-held camera work but I would recommend chomping on some Dramamine before watching this show.
The story??? Well…I’m only on the 2nd disc but I’m LOST…I don’t get it and not sure I want to. I’ll end up finishing this 1st season but that’s it[that is if i can stop from vomiting from all the hand-held stuff]. Perhaps I might enjoy the show a little more if i didn’t have to close my eyes on the “earthquake scenes”. Also, the story seems like it needs to move along a little faster. –The last one I watched they dedicated an entire 1 hour show to trying to find someone’s asthma inhaler. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz.
Is it just me or am I the only one who can’t STAND any sort of hand-held movie? Who started this “let’s get the audience sick with crazy camera movement” ? Anyway…that’s my Lost review so far…perhaps it’ll calm down in later shows and get more interesting.

Handheld camera work is supposed to add “realism” but from my experience it just adds “motion sickness”. Reality (for ME) is not THAT shakey. Maybe if I had the DT’s from 50 years of alcohol abuse it would look normal.
So I’m going to lose “LOST” from my Netflix Queue…
Well…it IS better than some of the other things out there…it’s just that I had heard it was just as good as Alias. I know it’s two different shows but it was just hard to watch. I’d say give the 1st disc a shot and see if you like it
I don’t like hand-held movies. I had enough of that crap in Blair Witch Project. I was also the LAST person in the lower 48 states to find out that the movie wasn’t real.
Uh huh, just call me “Mr. Gullible.” =) //john
hahahaha..now that is funny!! I was told it was real too …so i guess you didn’t bother watching part 2 LOL
I didn’t even know there was a part 2. LOL =))
Personally, I didn’t even notice the camera shaking after the first episode. I think it got considerably better after that. I love the characters and how they’ve all crossed paths in some way or another. At least it isn’t another law/medical/supernatural show. I LOVE Lost and now I am sad to find out that you don’t.
Well, you will just have to avoid my blog when the show starts the 2nd season. You know how much I talk about tv anyway.
smooches
I know there are a lot of people out there who are not affected by handheld camera work…my brother being one of them. I really wanted to like the series but because I felt like puking after the first 15 minutes, I could no longer watch it. I did listen to it and liked the character development and very interested in what was going to happen next. Too bad I’ll never know.
i tried again last night to watch..i’m now up to disc 4 …i guess i’m hypersensitive to motion camera work…i really get sick watching it…I’m thinking that maybe i would enjoy the stories if i didn’t have to close my eyes….i know..i’m a wimp
There is so much handheld shit going on in movies the past few years I’m beginning to think that directors consider it “artistic.” They’re all jumping on the “handheld” bandwagon. Too bad they’re too fucking stupid to come up with something more original like - “A GOOD SCRIPT!?!?” “Bourne Identity” and Bourne Supremacy” is a perfect example. I thought the script for the first one was very well written - and also NO HANDHELD. It didn’t need it. The script for the 2nd one sucked so badly I guess they had to juice it up with major handheld. Being a retired director after 35 years in the business, I know it’s NOT a budget consideration. It is not less expensive to shoot handheld than it is to shoot with a tripod or steadycam. But it does require some knowledge of creative blocking (which they obviously don’t have) - to make the actors come to the camera rather than to make the camera go to the actors. Most seasoned directors rarely use handheld unless the scene absolutely calls for it. But hey! What do I know? At my last job at Paramount Studios, they hired some 33 year old idiot producer who had never heard of Katherine Hepburn. That’s when I decided “it’s time to retire!”
Val, who has the 148000sq foot lot for sale on your website? A friend showed me. He was interested in purchasing it.
–john, FOB (friend of bob) hehe
Hi John - go to my website and get my email address from there and I will give you all the information. Thanks, Val
Hey, Bobby darling…stop trying to like it and face it, you don’t like it!
Just ’cause all the cool kids like it doesn’t mean you have to. Would you jump off a cliff if all the cool kids did??
smooches
I wanna be cool too though
I know…it’s not working

Damnit…I close my eyes, open them, and you move! As for Alias, I just started watching it midway through season 4, so now I am playing catch up, almost done with season 2, and I have season 3 and 4 on the way.
As for LOST…never got into it. It bored me to be honest. It is great, however, if one wants to fall asleep.
yeah Alias rocks!! i was blown away from the very 1st show.
sorry to change URL’s
so far it hasn’t been too painful
I am a huge Alias fan as well, although I haven’t seen Lost yet. For the record, lol.
well…i will watch the whole 1st season and give it a fair chance…i don’t hate it…mainly, I struggle with the handheld camera work.
yeah…Bourne part 2 was pretty handheld too..i had to turn that off….i guess with Lost..i’m able to make it through it ..i just expected more…
For what it’s worth…i really wanted to like it
I’ll finish the 1st season and give another opinion
I think it was Blair Witch which started the whole trend in the past decade or so. I never really cared for the Blair Witch project- even though I went to college with its creators.
I think while “lo-fi” audio has it’s merits- when it comes to video, we all want the most advanced visual experience possible, and that includes professional camera work. Unless it’s an earthquake disaster movie, please keep that camera still.
ya know…i didn’t mind the Blair Witch movie…But only because that movie marked a sign that someone didn’t have toi spend millions to make money on a movie…of course…now we have all these “right to DVD” movies out there and it’s really hard to weed through the crap…but once in a while ya find a nice gem
When Lost started showing over here (australia) I was quite excited as I’d heard so much good stuff about it! I lasted a total of 4 episodes. Like you, the camera annoyed me, but my biggest beef was with the plot. What the heck is the show about???? Couldn’t get it, was bored with them drawing everything out soooooo slooooooooowly. There’s a big difference between keeping enough mystery for the viewers to tune back in each week, and totally mystifying them when nothing gets resolved. Bah humbug. Dull show.
Hi Jaki
yeah…the stories can be pretty slow. I’m on disc 4 now and i still don’t know what’s going on other than
1. the plane crashed
2. there’s some sort of monster out there
and a handful of back stories from a few characters
I know quite a few folks out there really like the show otherwise it wouldn’t be getting renewed but i have to admit..i’m still LOST
I did the same thing with Alias and rented the DVDs, thank goodness cuz I would have strangled someone if I didnt have resolution to the whole “You’ve been gone for two years” plotline.
I haven’t watched Lost yet, but am hoping to do the same thing soon
Hi Tara and welcome!
yeah..i remember that “been gone for two year” ending…i’/m glad they didn’t take a whole season to explain it.
I’m just a sucker for the whole “she-spy” thing
err
all I am gonna say is that you need to watch it to completion before passing judgement
Its damn good just give it a chance
Hi Vinnie,
yeah..i’ll finish this 1st season(but it is work) …mainly it’s just hard to watch something that gives me motion sickness is all…even if the story was great, the camera work kills me
thanks for the comment
I’ve seen the trailers for the Lost show here in Germany, but It didn’t seem to my taste. Besides it’s dubbed into German. But I guess I wont rent it on DVD either now.
Thanks Bob for the review/tip, you’ve saved a few hours of my life
hiya Mr. Haddock…i’d say give the 1st disc a try and see if it’s something you might like. I really wanted to like it…and i keep trying. Maybe i’d like it better in German??
LOL, I m trying to get my hands on season 2!
I’ll just read the footnotes
I didn’t even notice tha camera work, probably becuase I was so annoyed by the ridiculous plot. Alias, on the other hand, rocks.
i stopped watching at disc 4…i just couldn’t go on…besides, i had the whole season 4 of 6 Ft Under to watch..i love that show
